The depth of material varies a great deal-some families have a large number of items, while others have only one or two. Obituaries

The Obituary Index for the Transylvania Times (1983-February 2022) includes obituaries published beginning in 1982 and is arranged alphabetically by surname. It also includes the following information, to the extent known:

• dates of death 
• dates obituaries were published  
• ages at death
• places of burial 
• maiden names and any previous married names

Map Collection

This collection contains a variety of maps including topography, road & street and historical reproduction covering Western North Carolina and beyond to a lesser extend. Local maps include forest lands, flood plains, industry plans & drawings, subdivisions and individual property surveys (including some hand-drawn).  These vary a great deal, please contact the Local History Room Staff for additional information.

Newspaper microfilm includes Sylvan Valley News, Brevard News, Transylvania Times, and Polk County News.
Local Records on microfilm include Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions minutes for Transylvania, Buncombe, Haywood, Henderson and Rutherford counties; Transylvania County land, estate, deed, guardian, marriage and election records; City of Brevard Board of Alderman or City Council minutes and code ordinances; Transylvania County Board of Education Minutes; and Church Records from Cathey’s Creek Baptist Church, Cherryfield Baptist Church, East Fork Baptist Church and Oak Grove Baptist Church.
