Support the Transylvania County Library

Donations to the Transylvania County Library Foundation support library services in Transylvania County, now and in the future.

Donate online to make a gift of support, or to give a gift in honor or memory of someone special. To donate by check, please attach a completed Gift Form and mail or deliver to: Transylvania County Library Foundation / 212 South Gaston Street / Brevard, NC 28712.

To recognize or memorialize someone with a book designated in their honor, please complete a Memorial Book Gift form. With your donation of $25 or more, a book for the library collection will be selected to receive a book plate recognizing a person you wish to honor or memorialize.

About the Foundation

Since 1944, the Transylvania County Library Foundation has worked to improve public library services to the citizens of Transylvania County. Today, the TCLF plays two primary roles: as custodian of endowment funds to support the enhancement of library services beyond what would be expected from tax dollars; and to serve as a conduit for private donations for specific library initiatives. Gifts to the Library Foundation have an immediate impact in our community and create a lasting legacy that will benefit library patrons now and for generations to come.

The Transylvania County Library Foundation is a 501©(3) non-profit and donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.

The Board of Directors of the Transylvania County Library Foundation has several targeted funding areas:

To enhance the collection, preservation, and access to Transylvania County’s Local History Collection. The Rowell Bosse North Carolina Room is a growing repository of family histories and genealogy; photographs, postcards and other images; newspapers, maps and manuscript materials. Your gift helps us to preserve and collect our heritage.

To provide for Children’s Special Events on a regular basis. This fund exists to bring high-quality literary and artistic experiences, such as renowned children’s authors, storytellers and other artists to the children of Transylvania County each year.

To fund Adult Speakers / Public Forums. The J.R. McDowell Speaker Series is designed to present a wide array of viewpoints on challenging and thought-provoking topics. The series is named for Trustee Emeritus the Rev. J.R. McDowell and has brought speakers such as Calvin Trillin, Ann Patchett and Doris Kearns Goodwin to Transylvania County.

To provide an Opportunity Fund.  This fund allows our Library to explore new technologies in library services “off budget”. Gifts to this fund established our collection of Playaways and have funded web development for our library.

The Elizabeth R. Kapp Tyson Professional Development Fund. Established from a gift of the estate of our long-time Library Director Elizabeth Kapp Tyson, its purpose is to enhance the continuing education and career development opportunities for the Library Staff.

Planned Giving

Many donors want to support our Library now and in the future.  The Transylvania County Library Foundation welcomes opportunities to discuss planned gifts to make a lasting legacy for our community.  Donors should also consult their own tax or legal advisors regarding their specific situations.

There are many ways to give in support of our Library.  Many people make donations on an annual basis.  Others prefer larger gifts for specific projects or to memorialize a friend or family member. Planned giving may be a simple bequest or a more complex trust arrangement.  Your attorney or financial planner can provide important information about how planned charitable giving fits your personal circumstances.

Helping the Library in this way is often as simple as adding a few sentences to your will.

For a specific bequest:

  • “I give, devise and bequeath to the Transylvania County Library Foundation ______% of my estate.”
  • “I give, devise and bequeath to the Transylvania County Library Foundation $________.”

For a residual bequest:

  • “I give, devise and bequeath to the Transylvania County Library Foundation all the rest, residue and remainder of my estate after my final expenses and any legal obligations have been settled.”

Please speak with your attorney regarding these matters.

To discuss these and other ways to make a gift, contact the Library Director, at 828.884.3151, ext. 1818.  We want to thank you for your vision and generosity.  Thank you for making a gift that reflects your commitment to our community.
