Field Trips for Grownups: The Landfill

Introducing: Field Trips for Grownups! Get behind-the-scenes tours of the places – and meet the people – who help our community thrive! These events are for folks 18+. We’ll ride the bus to our destination, walk around and see the sites, ask all our burning questions, and make friends with community helpers. Registration is required as space is limited.
First stop: the Landfill, aka: “The Best View in Transylvania County”
When: Wednesday, April 24 • 1:00-3:30 pm
Where: Meet at the Library at 1:00 pm; we’re riding the bus. *Thanks to Transylvania In Motion for providing us a safe and fun way to get where we’re going!*

Join us for a tour of the Transylvania County Landfill led by Kenn Webb, Director of Transylvania County’s Solid Waste Department. Did you ever wonder how a landfill gets built? How long does a landfill last, and what happens when it fills up? What about when it rains? How do we keep garbage where it belongs, and what can we do to reduce, reuse and recycle? Learn all this and more as we celebrate Earth Day a few days late at the county landfill.
Please note this field trip will consist of a moderate hike. Participants should plan for weather and wear closed-toe shoes or hiking boots.
Who is Kenn Webb? He hits the 42-year milestone in Environmental Management in 2024. A graduate of North Carolina State University in 1982, Kenn has experience with disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste as well as directing large Superfund cleanups, emergency response actions and as a contractor in natural stream restoration. He’s been the Director with Transylvania County Solid Waste since January 2018. Kenn and wife, Beth, reside in Brevard with rescue Cocker Spaniel, Pokey and big brother, Squash, the cat.
