FAQ

Below are categories of our most frequently asked questions.  If you don’t see your question, just give us a call at 828-884-3151 during Library Operating Hours.

How do I use the Library?

Library cards are available at no charge to those who reside, own property, work or attend school in Transylvania County. Others might be eligible for a non-resident card with an annual fee.

To get your library card, visit the Transylvania County Library in-person and bring:

  • A valid official photo identification (driver’s license, school identification card, passport, etc.)
  • Two forms of address verification, if not included on the photo identification (bank statement, utility bill, tax notice, etc)
  • Proof of eligibility, if you are a non-resident who works, attends school, or owns property in the county
  • A parent or guardian, if you are under the age of 12

If you are in a transitional period (for example, if you just moved here) and you do not have a current ID or proof of address, bring what you do have and we will help you explore your options.

The replacement fee for a lost card is $2.

Material may be renewed in person, by phone or through the Library’s online catalog

  • All eligible material will AUTO RENEW if there are not holds on the item — (Up to three times)
  • Books, CDs and audiobooks may be renewed three times if they are not on hold.
  • DVDs may be renewed three times if not on hold.
  • Special material (games, Book Club Kits, and puzzles) may not be renewed

You can view current checkouts, renew items, see bills, update your password and other things by logging in to your library account.

The default PIN/PASSWORD for Library cards is either the last 4 digits of your library card or phone number.

To change your PIN/password:

  1. Log in to your library account via the online catalog.
  2. Select Preferences, then Personal Information from the menus.
  3. Use the change password button to access the Update Password form.

Use the online catalog to place holds on items owned by the library or available via the NC Cardinal consortium. Once you have found the item you want by searching the catalog, select the “Place Hold” link and enter your library account information (if not already logged in.) We will notify you when it is available to pick up. This is the fastest way to get your requested item.

You can also place holds by calling 828.884.3151 ext. 2 or by visiting the library.

If an item is not available for holds in the online catalog, you can suggest that the library consider purchasing it.

There is no charge for the first replacement of a lost or damaged library card.  Each subsequent replacement costs $2.  To get your replacement card, bring a valid picture ID with your current mailing address to the Library’s Circulation Desk.

How do I request resources?

Let us know if there is something you want us to consider adding to the library collection! You can do this online, or by calling or visiting the library.

Adding an item for the library collection usually takes several weeks. If a copy is available via the NC Cardinal consortium, you’ll get it quicker by placing a hold in the online catalog, rather than suggesting a purchase. Your request may be filled by a copy from another library, even if purchased.

If we purchase a book that you suggest, we will place a hold on it for you and notify you when it is available for checkout. We are unable to place holds on suggested DVDs.

The Library cannot purchase all suggested material. Consideration is based on the Library’s Materials Selection Policy and current budgetary constraints.

Digital copies of historical photographs from the Rowell Bosse North Carolina Collection are available free of charge to users who agree to the Library’s Conditions of Use Policy.

If you want a specific focus for your tour, or something additional you would like included, please let us know at the time of scheduling. For more information about a group tour, please contact us.
