Noontime Notions – Titanic: Ship of Dreams

April 15 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

The Noontime Notions series begins for 2025 with Dr. Melinda Ratchford and her presentation “Titanic: Ship of Dreams”.  The program will begin at noon in the Rogow Room at the Transylvania County Library. Noontime Notions programs feature authors, performers, and presenters providing engaging notions for consideration, enjoyment, and discovery.   The program is made possible by the Friends of the Library and will last approximately one hour.

“The people we study in history were once as alive as we are this very minute.”

Nothing holds truer than the 2,228 stories to be found on the RMS Titanic.  This presentation is a glimpse into the world of 1912 and the amazing people who boarded the most luxurious and largest ship in the world and sailed off into immortality.  Having traveled to all the sites that have major Titanic connections (Belfast, Southampton, sinking site in North Atlantic, Halifax NC, NYC et al.), Dr. Melinda Ratchford will take you on a voyage in time to learn about the Titanic as well as to see her extensive collection of Titanic memorabilia.  Meet the young Robert Spedden and his Stief bear, Polar; the world’s wealthiest man and his beautiful new wife who had to leave New York society under a cloud of shame; and the elderly husband and wife who tested the vow of “till death us do part”.  You will experience the world of courage, fear, love and cowardice that is still alive over 112 years after her sinking.
