COPLAND VS. KORNGOLD: The Battle for American Film Music

July 19, 2019 @ 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm

During the Great Depression, Aaron Copland decided to become a film composer. His intention was to counteract the upholstered “Hollywood sound” of Erich Korngold and other European-born composers. Of the Hollywood films that Copland scored, “The Heiress” (1949) won an Academy Award for best music. But Copland gave up on Hollywood.
Joseph Horowitz, one of the most prominent and widely published writers on the topic of American music, curates this FREE lecture illuminating “the battle for American film music” with film clips scored by Copland, Korngold, Bernard Herrmann, and others.  NOTE THE START TIME OF 12:30 pm.
