All Things Appalachia: Moonshining and NASCAR

With UNC-A Professor of History  Dr. Dan Pierce

Learn about the fascinating history of NASCAR and its connection to moonshining in the hills and hollers of Appalachia with History Professor Dr. Dan Pierce of UNC-Asheville.

 

Dr. Pierce is the author of Tar Heel Lightnin’: How Secret Stills and Fast Cars Made North Carolina the Moonshine Capital of the World (2019); Corn From a Jar:  Moonshining in the Great Smoky Mountains (2013), and Real NASCAR: White Lightning, Red Clay, and Big Bill France (2010).

He is also the author of The Great Smokies:  From Natural Habitat to National Park (2000), has had his work published in numerous magazines and encyclopedias, and has appeared and consulted on many TV and radio shows including NPR’s Talk of the Nation; The History Channel; and the South Carolina ETV Emmy Award winning program, “Take on the South.”

 

All Things Appalachia is a monthly program series at the Transylvania County Library exploring the people, natural world, culture, and history of the southern Appalachian region.

Presenters include experts in the fields of history, ecology, outdoor recreation, and more.   The programs are on the first Thursday evening of most months from 6-7 pm in the Rogow Room.

These free programs are supported by the Friends of the Library.
