POSTPONED: Bag Lunch Arts – with photographer Tim Barnwell

The Bag Lunch Program Tuesday, March 17th at the Transylvania County Library has been postponed.  Author and photographer Tim Barnwell always draws a large and enthusiastic crowd — and with worries about large gatherings of people right now, we’ve decided to postpone his program.  Don’t worry — we’ll reschedule.  An announcement about that will be coming soon!  Any questions? Tide Runners: Exploring the Life of Shrimpers and Fishermen.

Photographer Tim Barnwell, author of seven books on our area, will return again this year for a presentation about his latest title, Tide Runners: Shrimping and Fishing on the Carolinas and Georgia Coast. Best known for his touching and evocative images of Appalachia, and popular guidebooks on the Blue Ridge Parkway and Great Smoky Mountains National Park, here he turns his keen eye and documentary talents to focus on the shrimping and fishing industries of the southeastern coast.

This nine-year exploration took him to the Outer Banks and seaside towns of North Carolina and to dozens of seaboard locations in South Carolina and Georgia where he met, photographed, and interviewed folks for this project. From before sunrise until after dark these men and women work, in all types of weather, through the seasons. Bound by the rhythms of the tides, they struggle to support themselves and their families while confronting financial hardship, market forces beyond their control, mechanical failures, and long hours under difficult and dangerous working conditions.

Over numerous trips to the area, Mr. Barnwell visited dozens of small communities, going out on a variety of shrimping and fishing boats, spending time getting to know the boat captains, strikers on the back of the trawlers, dock workers, food processors, and restaurant employees.

Mr. Barnwell will show his beautiful color portrait and landscape photographs, share stories gleaned from the oral history interviews he conducted with his subjects where they describe their work routines and daily activities, and share his experiences carrying out this project, with the audience.

TIM BARNWELL is a photographer and author based in Asheville, North Carolina, and is one of the most published photographers in the South. He has contributed to dozens of books and is the author of seven of his own-The Face of Appalachia, On Earth’s Furrowed Brow, Hands in Harmony, Blue Ridge Parkway Vistas, Great Smoky Mountains Vistas, Faces and Places of Cashiers Valley, and Tide Runners. His images have appeared in dozens of magazines, including Time, Newsweek, Southern Accents, House Beautiful, Outdoor Photographer, Sky and Telescope, Billboard, Travel South, Smithsonian, Our State, Astronomy, and National Parks.

Our monthly Bag Lunch Arts Series spotlights authors, artists, performers, and speakers sharing their talent and knowledge. Held on the third Tuesday of most months at 12 noon in the Rogow Family Community Room. Patrons are encouraged to bring along a bag lunch to enjoy before the program. Cookies and coffee are courtesy of the Friends of the Library. Programs last approximately one hour.
