Discover the hidden history of Transylvania County’s Black community with highlights on prominent figures, community locales, economic industries, and achievements. A positive and uplifting overview of accomplishments and significant people.
Laura Sperry is the Local History Librarian at Transylvania County Library. She and others on the steering committee created the Legacy education program to foster community understanding and education about lived experiences of local black community members.
Edith Darity is a retired community member of the Rosenwald community and has collected their stories and memorabilia in the Mary C. Jenkins Cultural and Community Center. She continues to serve on the Legacy leadership team.
All Things Appalachia is a monthly program series at the Transylvania County Library exploring the people, natural world, culture, and history of the southern Appalachian region. Presenters include experts in the fields of history, ecology, outdoor recreation, and more. The programs are on the first Thursday evening of most months at 6:30 pm in the Rogow Room. Each program lasts approximately one hour. These free programs are supported by the Friends of the Library.
