Read 1000 books to your newborn, infant, toddler, or preschooler before they begin kindergarten. It’s that simple! Sharing books with your child provides a great opportunity for bonding, fostering a love of reading, and building early literacy skills.

How to Get Started

• Come to the Library to pick up your first reading log or print one from below.
• Every time you read a book with your child, mark a number off the log.
• Each time your child reads 100 books, bring the reading log to the Youth Services desk to choose a sticker and pick up your next reading log.
• At the 500 book milestone, your child will receive a book to keep!
• At the 1000 book milestone, your child will receive a special tote bag and a book to keep!

• Who can participate?
  • Any child from birth until they enter kindergarten. It’s never too early to begin reading with your child.
• How long will it take to read 1000 books?
  • The program will take anywhere from a few months to a few years. The program is self-paced and will depend on how often you read together.
  • 3 books a day for 1 year = 1095 books
  • 1 book a day for 3 years = 1095 books
• Do I have to read library books?
  • No. You can read books at home, at the doctor’s office, or at a friend’s house. You can even count books you hear at library storytime, preschool, or daycare. You can read 1000 different books or the same book 1000 times. Every book counts!
• How many of my children can participate?
  • All of them as long as they have not yet started kindergarten. Make it even more fun and read as a family!
• Do I have to come to the library to get a new reading log?
  • No. If you can’t come right away to pick up your prize and new reading log, you can continue counting your books by printing a log from below:
