Your Library card is the gateway to the full array of free electronic resources. Some resources require a PIN, a password, or are accessible only from the Library’s public computers. Unless noted below, all resources are accessible 24/7 from anywhere.

African American Heritage provides key genealogical and historical records specific to tracing the lives of African Americans. This collection was created in partnership with leading African American genealogists and recognized leaders in genealogical information to develop a comprehensive mix of resources, records, and tools specifically pertaining to African Americans.

Ancestry is the world’s largest online family history resource with more than 20 billion records allowing users to search genealogy and family history records. Ancestry is available on the Library’s computers in the Rowell Bosse North Carolina Room and the Adult Reference area or on laptops through the Library’s Wi-Fi connection. Note: Ancestry is only available for in-Library use.

CQ Researcher via NC Live reports on issues shaping our world, with in-depth coverage of political and social issues, such as health, education, the environment, technology, and the U.S. economy.

Craftsy is an online resource for creative makers where you can find everything you need  – from basic instruction to advanced techniques.  Craftsy is available through the North Carolina Digital Library’s Libby app and website on your phone, iPad or tablet. Download the app here.

ConsumerReports.org provides trusted ratings and reviews, recommendations and buying advice for thousands of products and services.

Credo Reference via NC Live is a premier virtual reference collection includes encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases, images, audio files and videos in a wide expanse of subject areas.

Cypress Resume via NC Live is an easy-to-use resume building tool with a built-in writing process and automatic formatting.

DigitalNC contains thousands of items from libraries, archives, and museums around the state and is a terrific resource for students, teachers, researchers, and anyone interested in the history and culture of NC.   Digital images are part of the North Carolina Digital Heritage Center.  DigitalNC offers access to approximately 2,000 of our local images, 1944-1971 Brevard High School annuals, 1948-1966 Rosman High School annuals, 1940-1954 Ecusta Echo, 1900-1916 Sylvan Valley News, 1917-1923 Brevard News, 1933-1940 Transylvania Times, as well as material from Brevard College and the Brevard Music Center.

Ferguson’s Career Guidance via NC Live is a career database that enables users to explore industries and careers, plan their education, and research best practices for resumes, cover letters, interviewing, networking, and salaries/benefits.  Includes articles, career advice blogs, and streaming video.

Fold3 provides convenient access to US military records, including the stories, photos, and personal documents of men and women who served.  It also includes some international records and a variety of non-military records (e.g. passport applications and Homestead Records).

Gale in Context: Biography via NC Live is a biography database which merges Gale’s authoritative reference content, including Lives & Perspectives, with periodicals and multimedia.  Includes more than 600,000 biographical entries covering international figures from all time periods and areas of study.

Heritage Quest via NC Live contains the complete U.S. Federal Census from 1790-1940; over 28,000 fully scanned family and local histories indexed by title, individual name, place and keyword; local history articles;  selected records from the Revolutionary War Era Pension & Bounty-Land Warrant Application Files;  the searchable files of Freedman’s Bank (1865-1874), founded to serve African Americans; city directories, immigration records, military records, the U.S. Serial Set—Memorials, Petitions, and Private Relief Actions of the U.S. Congress in LexisNexis ® U.S. Serial Set, and more.

Historic NC Digital Newspapers via NC Live offers 3.5 million digitized pages of historic newspaper content from the North Carolina Collection at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Homegrown eBooks Collection via NC Live is a collection of more than 3,700 eBooks by a variety of North Carolina publishers.  Includes popular and scholarly non-fiction, novels by well-known NC authors, and award-winning short fiction and poetry.

hoopla is a digital media service that provides access to movies, TV shows, full music albums, eBooks, eMagazines and audiobooks.  Thousands of titles, always available. Also includes access to the Great Courses and 50+ eMagazines. Download the app here.  Note: Hoopla is not available for Student Access accounts.

Just for Kids Streaming Collection via NC Live is a streaming video collection provides a thoroughly kid-safe, advertisement-free media platform.  Includes the educational videos children want to watch—Sesame Street, The Electric Company, The Wubbulous World of Dr. Seuss, The Berenstain Bears, Franklin, and thousands more.

Kanopy is an online streaming service offering thousands of independent, classic, and documentary films— all available free with your library card. Kanopy is available through the North Carolina Digital Library on your computer and via the Libby app on your phone, iPad or tablet. Download the app here.  Note: Kanopy is not available for Student Access accounts.

LearningExpress Library and Prepstep Academic via NC Live is a suite of highly-acclaimed eLearning solutions which provide interactive tutorials, practice tests, eBooks, flashcards and articles for academic skill building, standardized test prep, career development and more.  Includes college entrance exam and occupational certification practice tests like the GED, GRE, SAT, ASVAB and more.

Library Catalog is our online catalog where patrons can search for material owned by TCL, see current checkout status, place holds, check fines, and more.

NCKids Digital Library is the statewide eBook consortium specifically for kids, pre-K through elementary.  It includes thousands of eBooks, audiobooks, videos and read-alongs through OverDrive’s digital reading platform. These resources are always available for kids across North Carolina.  Download the app here.

NC LIVE is our statewide information gateway, offering free online access to eBooks, audiobooks, videos, digital magazines, newspapers, journals, and most importantly, full-text access to thousands of articles from hundreds of magazines, newspapers, and journals. NC LIVE includes ProQuest Central which searches for full-text articles; Transparent Language, an interactive language learning module; Data-Axle Reference Solutions (formerly RefUSA); Morningstar Investment Center; CQ Researcher, and much more.

North Carolina Digital Library lets you download audiobooks, eBooks and digital magazines—24/7 with your Library card number and PIN via the Overdrive platform.  In addition to titles for adults, NCDL includes titles for kids and teens, including NC Battle of the Books titles. NoveList via NC Live offers suggestions for reading and read-alikes for your favorite books and authors.  This service is also integrated into the Library’s online catalog using the “Suggested Reads” feature.

Transparent Language provides a fun, effective, and engaging experience for learners of all levels looking to build their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in a foreign language.  With over 110 languages to choose from, including English for speakers of over 30 languages, there is something for every learner.

TumbleBooks is an online collection of eBooks and read-along picture books, non-fiction, graphic novels, math stories, language learning, educational videos, and games designed for pre-K through elementary.

Universal Class offers lifelong learning in 30+ subject areas (many with CEUs).  More than 500 courses are available, from computer software to gardening to babysitting 101. Universal Class is available through the North Carolina Digital Library on your computer and via the Libby app on your phone, iPad or tablet.
