Bag Lunch Arts Program @ Rogow Room, Transylvania County Library | Brevard | North Carolina | United States

Storyteller and performer Gary Greene will present “Carl Sandburg: A Wanderer’s Heart,” a character portrayal of Carl Sandburg.

Through biographical narrative, poems, songs and stories, Gary Greene will bring to life the story of Carl Sandburg from his youthful wanderings in the Midwest, to his blossoming career as a journalist and poet in Chicago, culminating in the “national treasure” he became in his later years at Connemara.  This will be an opportunity to experience Sandburg’s life through his own words, thoughts and passions.
Gary Greene has lived in WNC for 30 years and has divided his professional career between the church and the library.  He recently retired from Brevard-Davidson River Presbyterian Church as the Director of Family Ministries and currently works part-time in the Youth Services Department at the Library. It was through performing with the theater company Poetry Alive that he became acquainted with the popular poetry of Carl Sandburg.  Gary notes, “I found a kindred spirit in Sandburg.  We both grew up in the Midwest knowing the same landscapes and people.  We both loved telling stories to children and plinking around on a guitar.  We both ended up in the mountains of Western North Carolina and have been nourished by its beauty.  Today his work seems to me as timely as ever.”
