SUMMARY:Yoga
DESCRIPTION:Join us for yoga at the Library!\nClass starts at 9:30 am\, and instructor Clare Desmelik leads the series. Class will take place in the library amphitheater April through November.  We’ll move inside to the Rogow Room during the colder months from December – March. There are no rain dates\, but the porch might be an alternate location for gentle rain.  Yoga is an ancient practice that uses a series of seated and standing body poses held with a focus on the breath and the inner experience.  Yoga is a great mood booster and increases flexibility of mind and body. Everyone is welcome!  This class is free and open to all ages and experiences levels.  Pop in for a single class or attend them all. \nBring a yoga mat or towel and water\, and be sure to dress in layers!\nClare Desmelik has been practicing yoga since the early 2000’s and believes it to be a saving grace. She trusts in the power of taking a deep breath\, as well as taking some ‘time in’ to notice and find awareness in the body.  She feels that anyone’s emotional\, physical\, or mental health will benefit from a gentle yoga practice.  It helps reclaim your sense of calm and quiets the mind; it helps you find freedom and courage in your heart; and it allows you to feel strength and poise in your capable body. She has been enjoying teaching yoga in the Brevard and Asheville area since 2016.  She brings an approachable and revitalizing ‘go with the flow’ vibe to her classes\, which are suitable for any and all!   Clare is also the Spanish and Yoga teacher at Mountain Sun Community School\, a full-time advocate for childhood cancer and pediatric brain tumor awareness\, a grateful mom of two awesome boys\, and is often seen with her golden retrievers. She is authentically convinced that ‘Love Heals’ and yoga is all about love.

SUMMARY:Noontime Notions - Documenting Biodiversity in the Smokies: What We’ve Found\, What It Means\, and What Comes Next
DESCRIPTION:The Noontime Notions series continues.  The program will begin at noon in the Rogow Room at the Transylvania County Library. Noontime Notions programs feature authors\, performers\, and presenters providing engaging notions for consideration\, enjoyment\, and discovery.   The program is made possible by the Friends of the Library and will last approximately one hour. \nSince 1998\, the small nonprofit Discover Life in America has been documenting life in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Its flagship project\, the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (ATBI)\, is based on the bold question: “What if we listed every living thing in the Smokies to better understand just how biodiverse the park actually is?”. Twenty-eight years later\, the ATBI includes over 22\,800 known species. Even more impressive\, over 1000 of those species are completely new to science. Now\, in an era of increased conservation threats like climate change and insect decline\, it’s time to turn this dataset into focused action. This talk will cover the history of this incredible organization\, dive into some of the most fascinating species in the ATBI\, and discuss how this data can transform the way that all of us conserve biodiversity in Southern Appalachia.\n\nSam Rosolina is the Vice President of Applied Innovation at Microbial Insights\, a laboratory focused on the use of bioremediation to address soil and groundwater contamination. He also serves as Board Chair for Discover Life in America\, one of the four nonprofit partners of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Born and raised in northeast Tennessee\, Sam developed an early appreciation for nature and has spent his career working to protect it. He holds a BA from Berea College and a PhD from the University of Tennessee\, Knoxville.\n

DESCRIPTION:Looking Glass Rock Writers’ Conference faculty member David Joy will give public readings of his work at the Transylvania County Library on Saturday\, May 16\, at 7:30 pm.  \nSponsored by the Transylvania County Library Foundation and Brevard College\, The Looking Glass Rock Writers’ Conference (LGRWC) offers a unique creative experience for writers\, exploring the theme “A Sense of Place.” Conference participants will work closely with award-winning writers Leslie Jamison\, Victoria Chang\, and David Joy. In addition\, conference faculty will present public readings of their work on Friday\, May 15 at Brevard College’s Porter Center and Saturday\, May 16 at the Transylvania County Library.  Both events are free to attend and open to the community. Highland Books will be on-site with books for sale\, and the authors will be available to sign copies after their presentations. Workshop attendees were selected based on applications submitted last fall; applications for May 2027 workshops will open in September 2026. \n \nFiction workshop leader David Joy grew up in the Piedmont along the Catawba River\, moved away at eighteen\, and has spent the last 22 years 100 miles west in the mountains of Jackson County. David Joy is a critically acclaimed author known for his raw\, unflinching portrayals of life in rural Appalachia. With novels that pulse with tension\, beauty\, and heartbreak\, Joy has established himself as one of the foremost voices in contemporary Southern literature. His works delve into the complexities of poverty\, crime\, family\, and the human spirit\, capturing both the grit and grace of a region too often misunderstood. Joy is the author of five novels\, including Those We Thought We Knew (winner of the 2023 Willie Morris Award and the 2023 Thomas Wolfe Prize)\, When These Mountains Burn (winner of the 2020 Dashiell Hammett Award)\, The Line That Held Us (winner of the 2018 Southern Book Prize)\, The Weight of This World\, and Where All Light Tends to Go (Edgar finalist for Best First Novel).

DESCRIPTION:In September 2024\, Hurricane Helene brought devastating flooding to Western North Carolina\, damaging roads\, homes\, and entire communities. Rising Above Helene: Western North Carolina’s Journey to Recovery looks at what happened next—how neighbors helped one another\, how communities responded\, and how recovery began in the months that followed. \nThe film highlights the role of residents\, volunteers and local governments\, showing how emergency response and long-term recovery efforts came together across the region. It was produced by 100 Strong Productions\, a service of the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners. \nThe screening will be followed by a panel discussion with county employees who were closely involved in the response and recovery. Panelists will reflect on the challenges faced\, lessons learned\, and what recovery has meant for our region.
