DESCRIPTION:Join us for yoga at the Library!\nClass starts at 9:30 am\, and instructor Clare Desmelik leads the series. Class will take place in the library amphitheater April through November.  We’ll move inside to the Rogow Room during the colder months starting October 24th – March. There are no rain dates\, but the porch might be an alternate location for gentle rain.  Yoga is an ancient practice that uses a series of seated and standing body poses held with a focus on the breath and the inner experience.  Yoga is a great mood booster and increases flexibility of mind and body. Everyone is welcome!  This class is free and open to all ages and experiences levels.  Pop in for a single class or attend them all. \nBring a yoga mat or towel and water\, and be sure to dress in layers!\nClare Desmelik has been practicing yoga since the early 2000’s and believes it to be a saving grace. She trusts in the power of taking a deep breath\, as well as taking some ‘time in’ to notice and find awareness in the body.  She feels that anyone’s emotional\, physical\, or mental health will benefit from a gentle yoga practice.  It helps reclaim your sense of calm and quiets the mind; it helps you find freedom and courage in your heart; and it allows you to feel strength and poise in your capable body. She has been enjoying teaching yoga in the Brevard and Asheville area since 2016.  She brings an approachable and revitalizing ‘go with the flow’ vibe to her classes\, which are suitable for any and all!   Clare is also the Spanish and Yoga teacher at Mountain Sun Community School\, a full-time advocate for childhood cancer and pediatric brain tumor awareness\, a grateful mom of two awesome boys\, and is often seen with her golden retrievers. She is authentically convinced that ‘Love Heals’ and yoga is all about love.

SUMMARY:Chautauqua Festival 2025 - American Celebrity - Albert Einstein
DESCRIPTION:Hear his story in his own words. Albert Einstein did things his own way and in his own time. As a toddler\, he worried his family when he was slow to speak\, but then surprised them when he began to speak in full sentences. He frustrated his teachers since he saw no sense to drill and practice exercises; got correct answers\, but did not follow lab procedures and came up with his own. In 1905 he published four scientific papers which would elevate him to international attention within the scientific community. Then\, he linked space\, time and gravity with his General Theory of Relativity and changed our understanding of the nature of the universe. \nLarry Bounds (Albert Einstein)  \nLarry Bounds has performed on the Chautauqua stage since 2002. Over the years he has portrayed Dicken\, Churchill\, Disney\, Crockett\, Von Braun\, Cronkite\, and Harry Houdini to numerous Chautauqua audiences nationwide. Larry holds a B.A. in theatre and a M.Ed from The University of Tennessee\, and he is a National Board Certified educator. For 35 years he taught public high school. He was awarded his school’s Teacher of the Year in 2003 and was recognized as one of the Upstate’s Most Influential Educators by “Parent Magazine” in 2018. He has performed as a professional magician since 1973\, including 8 years entertaining with Ripley’s Believe It or Not! The International Brotherhood of Magicians admitted him to the Order of Merlin in 2009. \nBased in Greenville\, SC\, Chautauqua History Comes Alive is interactive theater and the performances offer an astonishing journey into the past allowing the audience to hear stories of the characters in their own words. This year’s character performances are Erma Bombeck (Saturday\, June 7); Babe Ruth (Tuesday\, June 10); Josephine Baker (Thursday\, June 12); Lucille Ball (Saturday\, June 14); and Albert Einstein (Tuesday\, June 17). SUMMARY:Noontime Notions - How We Keep Each Other Close
DESCRIPTION:Katherine Scott Crawford\, a local historical novelist\, will delve into the post-revolutionary era in the South\, and the fascinating world of miniature portraits—topics she researched while writing her latest historical novel\, The Miniaturist’s Assistant. During her talk\, How We Keep Each Other Close\, she will explore the early 19th century’s version of the personal and/or family portrait—something akin to our 21st century “selfie\,” a school picture\, or even a professional headshot. She’ll discuss the United States’s own “Regency Era” (minus the regent\, of course) and explain how early Americans chose to remember the people they loved best. Highland Books will be on hand with copies of her novel for sale and signing following the program. \nKatherine Scott Crawford is the award-winning author of The Miniaturist’s Assistant and Keowee Valley. A former backpacking guide\, adjunct professor\, and recovering academic\, her newspaper column appeared across the country and abroad\, including in the Asheville Citizen-Times\, The Greenville News\, USA Today\, the Detroit Free Press\, and Herald Scotland. Winner of a North Carolina Arts Award in fiction\, she holds an MFA in Writing from the Vermont College of Fine Arts. She directs writing retreats at a remote mountain lodge near Brevard\, where she has lived with her family for over 20 years. \nThe program will begin at noon in the Rogow Room at the Transylvania County Library. Noontime Notions programs feature authors\, performers\, and presenters providing engaging notions for consideration\, enjoyment\, and discovery.   The program is made possible by the Friends of the Library and will last approximately one hour. \n  \n

More than six decades after “I Love Lucy” ended\, Ball remains one of America’s most beloved entertainers. \nLeslie Goddard (Lucille Ball) \nLeslie Goddar is an award-winning historiam\, author and actress who has been presenting historical portrayals for more than 20 years. She has performed for Greenville Chautauqua audiences as Amelia Earhart\, Mary Pickford\, Bette Davis\, Alice Paul\, Jackie Kennedy and Georgia O’Keeffe. During more than a decade working as a museum educator and director\, she developed a passion for mid-century American history\, popular culture and women’s history.  In 2013\, she launched her own business as a full-time solo performer and lecturer and now regularly presents more than 400 programs annually.  A lifelong resident of Illinois\, she has written three books on Chicago history.  She graduated from Stanford University and holds a master’s degree in theater from the University of Illinois\, as well as a PhD in interdisciplinary studies from Northwestern University. \nBased in Greenville\, SC\, Chautauqua History Comes Alive is interactive theater and the performances offer an astonishing journey into the past allowing the audience to hear stories of the characters in their own words. DESCRIPTION:Hear her story in her own words. Josephine Baker never let reality hold her back. Growing up in the black ghetto of St. Louis\, she memorized every song\, dance and skit she saw at the local theater. She practiced and performed for family and friends. In 1925 at age 19\, she was cast in “La Revue Negre”\, leaving American behind to travel to Paris\, France. She never lived in the U.S. again. She found acclaim\, fame\, and fortune in Europe and was welcomed and celebrated around the globe\, but she could not accept the racism at home in America and lived the life of an expat. \nBecky Stone (Josephine Baker) \nBecky Stone grew up in Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania before going to Vassar College and earning a degree in Drama. After obtaining her M.A. in Elementary Educational Counseling from Villanova University\, Becky worked seven years as an elementary and middle school counselor in the Philadelphia School System. In North Carolina\, she taught drama for ten years at a Christian classical school. Her performance experience includes acting professionally in regional theater companies and storytelling in schools\, universities\, museums\, festivals\, camps and libraries. She presented her first Chautauqua character\, Pauli Murray\, in 2003 for the Greenville Chautauqua.  Becky has since developed performances for Rosa Parks\, Harriet Tubman\, Maya Angelou\, and Stagecoach Mary Fields. \nBased in Greenville\, SC\, Chautauqua History Comes Alive is interactive theater and the performances offer an astonishing journey into the past allowing the audience to hear stories of the characters in their own words. SUMMARY:Chautauqua Festival 2025 - American Celebrity - Babe Ruth
DESCRIPTION:Hear his story in his own words. In the annals of American sports history\, no name resonates as profoundly as that of George Herman “Babe” Ruth. Known as the Sultan of Swat\, Ruth wasn’t just a baseball player; he was a cultural phenomenon. His unprecedented hitting and larger-than-life personality transformed him into America’s first true national sporting celebrity. His career coincided with the rise of mass media and the Roaring twenties\, creating a perfect storm for the birth of a new kind of American idol. \nKevin Treu (Babe Ruth) \nKevin Treu has been a Professor of Computer Science at Furman University since 1992 and has served as chair of the Department of Computer Science since 2004. In 2023 he was honored with the Chiles-Harrill Award for contributions made to the lives of students.  Away from Furman\, Kevin has been an actor\, director and playwright in the local upstate theater community for nearly 30 years.  He recently received Director of the Year honors for “Hank Williams: Lost Highway” at the Spartanburg Little Theater.  He has been the head coach of the Devenger Dolphins summer league swim team for more than 20 years and regularly competes in open water swim races all over the country.  He is a passionate lifelong baseball fan\, but unfortunately his Pittsburgh Pirates have not won a World Series in almost 50 years. \nBased in Greenville\, SC\, Chautauqua History Comes Alive is interactive theater and the performances offer an astonishing journey into the past allowing the audience to hear stories of the characters in their own words. SUMMARY:Chautauqua Festival 2025 - American Celebrity - Erma Bombeck
DESCRIPTION:Hear her story in her own words.  Erma Bombeck was no overnight success. She honed her craft writing humor articles for her school newspaper\, writing flight manuals for the Air Force\, and obituaries for her local paper. When her “At Wit’s End” column launched at the “Dayton Journal Herald” in 1965\, it was swiftly picked up in syndication by over 500 newspapers across the country.  She appeared on TV morning shows as well as “The Tonight Show” with Johnny Carson sharing her simple observations of the everyday absurdities of being a wife and mother in middle America. \nSusan Marie Frontczak (Erma Bombeck) \nIn her 24 years as a Living History scholar\, Susan Marie has given more than 875 presentations as Marie Curie\, Mary Shelley\, Eleanor Roosevelt\, Clara Barton\, Irene Castle and Erma Bombeck across 43 of the United States and abroad. She also works with both adults and youth to develop their own Living History presentations. She authored the Young Chautauqua handbooks for Colorado Humanities and taught at the Chautauqua Training Institute in 2022-23.  As a teen\, Susan Marie competed with her mother to see which of them could snag the monthly “Good Housekeeping” first in order to read Erma Bombeck’s column.  With Bombeck\, Susan Marie’s challenge is to convey her humor along with the person behind the persona. \nBased in Greenville\, SC\, Chautauqua History Comes Alive is interactive theater and the performances offer an astonishing journey into the past allowing the audience to hear stories of the characters in their own words. This year’s character performances are Erma Bombeck (Saturday\, June 7); Babe Ruth (Tuesday\, June 10); Josephine Baker (Thursday\, June 12); Lucille Ball (Saturday\, June 14); and Albert Einstein (Tuesday\, June 17). Doors open one hour before show\, seating is first come\, first served. The Chautauqua Festival at the Transylvania County Library is made possible by the generous support of the Friends of the Library.

Class will take place in the library amphitheater April through November.  We’ll move inside to the Rogow Room during the colder months starting October 24th – March. There are no rain dates\, but the porch might be an alternate location for gentle rain.  Yoga is an ancient practice that uses a series of seated and standing body poses held with a focus on the breath and the inner experience.  Yoga is a great mood booster and increases flexibility of mind and body. Everyone is welcome!  This class is free and open to all ages and experiences levels.  Pop in for a single class or attend them all. \nBring a yoga mat or towel and water\, and be sure to dress in layers!\nClare Desmelik has been practicing yoga since the early 2000’s and believes it to be a saving grace. She trusts in the power of taking a deep breath\, as well as taking some ‘time in’ to notice and find awareness in the body.  She feels that anyone’s emotional\, physical\, or mental health will benefit from a gentle yoga practice.  It helps reclaim your sense of calm and quiets the mind; it helps you find freedom and courage in your heart; and it allows you to feel strength and poise in your capable body. She has been enjoying teaching yoga in the Brevard and Asheville area since 2016.  She brings an approachable and revitalizing ‘go with the flow’ vibe to her classes\, which are suitable for any and all!   Clare is also the Spanish and Yoga teacher at Mountain Sun Community School\, a full-time advocate for childhood cancer and pediatric brain tumor awareness\, a grateful mom of two awesome boys\, and is often seen with her golden retrievers. She is authentically convinced that ‘Love Heals’ and yoga is all about love.

He has taught science\, engineering\, and math in both formal and informal settings for the past 20 years. Although his academic career was in Computer Science\, David has been a life-long amateur astronomer. David and his wife\, Caroline\, have lived in Brevard for almost four years. They have two children\, both of whom\, for better or worse\, are also nerds. \nMay 13th — Astronomy 101: the Universe in 75 Minutes \nWe humans have always been fascinated by the night sky. It’s been our calendar\, a collection of signposts that show us the way from point A to point B\, and a connect-the-dots canvas for us to draw out our myths. Join David for this (slightly compressed) survey of modern Astronomy. \nMay 20th — Artemis: Earth\, Moon\, Mars —  Our First Steps Towards Living on Other Worlds \nIn the late 1960s and early 1970s\, 12 Americans walked on the Moon. They were the first humans to set foot on another world. Then we stopped going. Now\, at long last\, we’re going back. Join David as he discusses the Artemis program\, NASA’s plan to take humanity back to the Moon\, and then on to Mars. \nMay 27th — SETI: the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence \nAre we alone in the Universe? Is life ubiquitous or rare? What about intelligent life? Are there other technological civilizations out there? Join  David as he presents a talk on SETI (the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) and attempts to explain why we can’t answer any of those questions\, but may soon be able to.

DESCRIPTION:Looking Glass Rock Writers’ Conference faculty members Terrance Hayes and Elizabeth Rush will give public readings of their work at the Transylvania County Library on Saturday\, May 17\, at 7:30 pm.  \nSponsored by the Transylvania County Library Foundation and Brevard College\, The Looking Glass Rock Writers’ Conference (LGRWC) offers a unique creative experience for writers\, exploring the theme “A Sense of Place.” Conference participants will work closely with award-winning writers Annette Saunooke Clapsaddle\, Terrance Hayes\, and Elizabeth Rush. In addition\, conference faculty will present public readings of their work on Friday\, May 16 at Brevard College’s Porter Center and Saturday\, May 17 at the Transylvania County Library.  Both events are free to attend and open to the community. Highland Books will be on-site with books for sale\, and the authors will be available to sign copies after their presentations. Workshop attendees were selected based on applications submitted last fall; applications for May 2026 workshops will open in September 2025. \nOne of the most compelling voices in American poetry\, Terrance Hayes is the author of seven books of poetry: So to Speak (2023); American Sonnets for My Past and Future Assassin (2018)\, a finalist for the 2018 National Book Award in Poetry and winner of the Bobbitt National Prize for Poetry; How to Be Drawn (2015)\, longlisted for the 2015 National Book Award in Poetry; and Lighthead (2010)\, winner of the 2010 National Book Award in Poetry. He has been a recipient of many honors and awards\, including a 2014 MacArthur Foundation Genius Award\, two Pushcart selections\, eight Best American Poetry selections\, and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and the Guggenheim Foundation. His poems have appeared in literary journals and magazines\, including The New Yorker\, Poetry\, The American Poetry Review\, Ploughshares\, Harvard Review\, and Poetry. His poetry has also been featured on The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer. Born in Columbia\, South Carolina\, Terrance Hayes earned a BA at Coker College and an MFA at the University of Pittsburgh. Hayes is currently a Professor of Creative Writing at New York University. \nNonfiction workshop leader Elizabeth Rush is the author of The Quickening: Creation and Community at the Ends of the Earth and Rising: Dispatches from the New American Shore\, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. In 2019\, Rush joined fifty-seven scientists and crew onboard a research icebreaker for months. The destination: Thwaites Glacier. The goal: to learn as much as possible about this mysterious place\, never before visited by humans\, and believed to be both rapidly deteriorating and capable of making a catastrophic impact on global sea-level rise this century; this voyage formed the basis of The Quickening. Rush’s work has appeared in wide range of publications from the New York Times to Orion and Guernica. She is the recipient of fellowships from the National Science Foundation\, National Geographic\, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation\, the Howard Foundation\, the Andrew Mellon Foundation and the Metcalf Institute. Today she lives in Providence\, Rhode Island with her husband and son. She teaches creative nonfiction at Brown University. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Noontime Notions: Science Series
DESCRIPTION:The Noontime Notions: Science Series will begin at noon in the Rogow Room at the Transylvania County Library. Noontime Notions programs feature authors\, performers\, and presenters providing engaging notions for consideration\, enjoyment\, and discovery.   The program is made possible by the Friends of the Library and will last approximately 75 minutes. \nJoin presenter David Johnston for this three program series adventure to the stars.  David serves as a Solar System Ambassador for NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory\, as a Science Advisor for the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute\, and is co-founder of the AstroBrevard Astronomy Club. He has taught science\, engineering\, and math in both formal and informal settings for the past 20 years. Although his academic career was in Computer Science\, David has been a life-long amateur astronomer. David and his wife\, Caroline\, have lived in Brevard for almost four years. They have two children\, both of whom\, for better or worse\, are also nerds. \nMay 13th — Astronomy 101: the Universe in 75 Minutes \nWe humans have always been fascinated by the night sky. It’s been our calendar\, a collection of signposts that show us the way from point A to point B\, and a connect-the-dots canvas for us to draw out our myths. Join David for this (slightly compressed) survey of modern Astronomy. \nMay 20th — Artemis: Earth\, Moon\, Mars —  Our First Steps Towards Living on Other Worlds \nIn the late 1960s and early 1970s\, 12 Americans walked on the Moon. They were the first humans to set foot on another world. Then we stopped going. Now\, at long last\, we’re going back. Join David as he discusses the Artemis program\, NASA’s plan to take humanity back to the Moon\, and then on to Mars. \nMay 27th — SETI: the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence \nAre we alone in the Universe? Is life ubiquitous or rare? What about intelligent life? Are there other technological civilizations out there? Join  David as he presents a talk on SETI (the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) and attempts to explain why we can’t answer any of those questions\, but may soon be able to.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for this month’s Cookbook Club!\nEach month we look at cookbooks\, do a little cooking\, and meet to talk about our experiences. \nFor May’s meeting\, we’ll cook from Milk Street’s Cook What You Have: Make a Meal Out of Almost Anything by Christopher Kimball.  In this book\, 225 recipes begin with the most common ingredients in your kitchen\, but they provide more than a lesson in practicality. They teach an improvisational\, creative way to cook\, so you can stop shopping and start cooking what you have. \nRegistered participants can stop by the library to review the book and choose a recipe to make and share with the other participants. We’ll taste each other’s culinary creations\, talk about the cookbooks\, share what we learned and swap recipes. \n \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Join us for yoga at the Library!\nClass starts at 9:30 am\, and instructor Clare Desmelik leads the series. Class will take place in the library amphitheater April through November.  We’ll move inside to the Rogow Room during the colder months from December – March. There are no rain dates\, but the porch might be an alternate location for gentle rain.  Yoga is an ancient practice that uses a series of seated and standing body poses held with a focus on the breath and the inner experience.  Yoga is a great mood booster and increases flexibility of mind and body. Everyone is welcome!  This class is free and open to all ages and experiences levels.  Pop in for a single class or attend them all. \nBring a yoga mat or towel and water\, and be sure to dress in layers!\nClare Desmelik has been practicing yoga since the early 2000’s and believes it to be a saving grace. She trusts in the power of taking a deep breath\, as well as taking some ‘time in’ to notice and find awareness in the body.  She feels that anyone’s emotional\, physical\, or mental health will benefit from a gentle yoga practice.  It helps reclaim your sense of calm and quiets the mind; it helps you find freedom and courage in your heart; and it allows you to feel strength and poise in your capable body. She has been enjoying teaching yoga in the Brevard and Asheville area since 2016.  She brings an approachable and revitalizing ‘go with the flow’ vibe to her classes\, which are suitable for any and all!   Clare is also the Spanish and Yoga teacher at Mountain Sun Community School\, a full-time advocate for childhood cancer and pediatric brain tumor awareness\, a grateful mom of two awesome boys\, and is often seen with her golden retrievers. She is authentically convinced that ‘Love Heals’ and yoga is all about love.

SUMMARY:Spinning Toward the Sun - Author Readings
DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, May 5th at 6:30 pm\, the Transylvania County Library will host readings by some of the contributing authors of Spinning Toward the Sun: Essays on Writing\, Resilience and the Creative Life\, a new guidebook curated by Nora Shalaway Carpenter. The book features essays from a diverse group of over 30 nationally-celebrated authors and Western NC powerhouse creatives. It is part craft manual and part life companion\, offering both inspiration and hands-on guidance to fellow creatives and anyone dealing with tough times. Every author donated their time and words to Spinning\, and 100% of the proceeds from every book will go to the recovery of Hurricane Helene supporting nonprofits Beloved Asheville and World Central Kitchen. Thus\, in these particularly tough times\, Spinning Toward the Sun also serves as an act of solidarity\, an example of how we can still mobilize to help our communities — and each other. Authors Megan Shepherd\, David Gill\, Lizzie Brooks\, and curator Nora Shalaway Carpenter will present readings from the book. Highland Books will be on hand with copies of the book for sale and signing. The event will be held in the Rogow Room. \nThe reading will feature Brevard’s own Megan Shepherd\, David MacInnis Gill and Lizzie Brooks. Shepherd\, a New York Times bestseller and Carnegie Medal-nominated author\, grew up in her family’s independent bookstore in Brevard and is the author of many acclaimed novels for readers of all ages including “The Madman’s Daughter”\, “Dog Star” and “Malice House”. Gill is the critically acclaimed author of books for both youth and adults including “Soul Enchilada” and “Black Hole Sun”. Brooks has published in “Beyond Words Literary Magazine” and “Door + Jar Magazine”. Curator Nora Shalaway Carpenter is an award-winning author\, writing educator\, and audiobook narrator. Her books include “The Edge of Everything”\, the anthology “Rural Voices” and her newest novel “Fault Lines”. None of the authors will receive any payment or proceeds from the book; thus serving as a reminder that we all have the capacity to help our communities—with our time\, our energy\, and our creative gifts. \n“Spinning Toward the Sun” was published by Burlwood Books\, an independent press based in Austin\, Texas.  The book was released in March 2025 and is available for purchase everywhere\, in both print and eBook. SUMMARY:The Radio Sky: How We Learned to Capture Cosmic Radio Waves - Dr. Diana Hannikainen
DESCRIPTION:The Transylvania County Library\, the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute\, and the Charlotte Amateur Astronomy Club are bringing astronomer Diana Hannikainen to Brevard. Hannikainen is the newly appointed Editor in Chief at Sky & Telescope magazine. Her talk\, “The Radio Sky: How We Learned to Capture Cosmic Radio Waves” will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday\, April 30\, 2025\, in the Rogow Room of the Transylvania County Library. The library is located at 212 S. Gaston St. in Brevard. \nIn her talk\, Dr. Hannikainen will trace the history of the development of radio telescopes\, from Karl Jansky’s early experiments to today’s ambitious plans for a telescope on the Moon. Along the way\, she’ll touch upon some of the remarkable discoveries brought to us by radio astronomy.  Dr. Hannikainen studied for her BSc in Physics and Astronomy at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland\, and then moved to Finland\, in part to explore her Finnish roots. While there\, she embarked on graduate studies at the University of Helsinki\, and received an MSc followed by a PhD in Astrophysics\, the latter in conjunction with the University of Sydney in Australia. The subject of her PhD thesis was multiwavelength observations (X-ray\, radio) of microquasars\, a topic she focused on throughout her time in research. In 2017\, she switched careers and moved to Cambridge\, MA\, to take up the position of Observing Editor at Sky & Telescope. Her new role as Editor in Chief makes her the first woman at the helm of Sky & Telescope in its 83-year history.
