SUMMARY:Yoga
DESCRIPTION:Join us for yoga at the Library!\nClass starts at 9:30 am\, and instructor Clare Desmelik leads the series. Class will take place in the library amphitheater April through November.  We’ll move inside to the Rogow Room during the colder months from December – March. There are no rain dates\, but the porch might be an alternate location for gentle rain.  Yoga is an ancient practice that uses a series of seated and standing body poses held with a focus on the breath and the inner experience.  Yoga is a great mood booster and increases flexibility of mind and body. Everyone is welcome!  This class is free and open to all ages and experiences levels.  Pop in for a single class or attend them all. \nBring a yoga mat or towel and water\, and be sure to dress in layers!\nClare Desmelik has been practicing yoga since the early 2000’s and believes it to be a saving grace. She trusts in the power of taking a deep breath\, as well as taking some ‘time in’ to notice and find awareness in the body.  She feels that anyone’s emotional\, physical\, or mental health will benefit from a gentle yoga practice.  It helps reclaim your sense of calm and quiets the mind; it helps you find freedom and courage in your heart; and it allows you to feel strength and poise in your capable body. She has been enjoying teaching yoga in the Brevard and Asheville area since 2016.  She brings an approachable and revitalizing ‘go with the flow’ vibe to her classes\, which are suitable for any and all!   Clare is also the Spanish and Yoga teacher at Mountain Sun Community School\, a full-time advocate for childhood cancer and pediatric brain tumor awareness\, a grateful mom of two awesome boys\, and is often seen with her golden retrievers. She is authentically convinced that ‘Love Heals’ and yoga is all about love.

SUMMARY:Noontime Notions - From Appalachia to Antarctica\, the Adventures of Val Myers
DESCRIPTION:The Noontime Notions series continues. The program will begin at noon in the Rogow Room at the Transylvania County Library. Noontime Notions programs feature authors\, performers\, and presenters providing engaging notions for consideration\, enjoyment\, and discovery. The program is made possible by the Friends of the Library and will last approximately one hour. \n\nIn 2023\, 828-born author and arctic expedition guide\, Jacob “Val” Myers\, attempted to become the youngest person in history to ski alone and without resupply to the Geographic South Pole in Antarctica. This presentation explores both that harrowing adventure and the way his Appalachian upbringing shaped his relationship with the lands he has travelled to. \nVal is the author of Blue Ridge | White Desert\, a mountain endurance athlete\, and a backpacking guide for Adventure Grown Guides in Pisgah Forest. He is based in Sapphire\, North Carolina\, where he trains and works. Come listen to Val share his story with us at Noontime Notions!

Families will sing\, clap along and dance in their seats! \nJennifer is a singer\, storyteller\, piper and poet living in Asheville\, North Carolina. She has been a featured storyteller at the National Storytelling Festival in Jonesboro; interviewed by Studs Terkel on WFMT; and by Noah Adams on NPR. She’s sung with toddlers in church basements\, told stories at library story nights\, has published two children’s books\, recorded seven CDs\, and performed at thousands of schools nationwide.

SUMMARY:The American Red Cross Babysitter's Training Course with Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED
DESCRIPTION:The American Red Cross is the nation’s leader in babysitting classes and child care training – and will prepare participants to become one of the most capable\, trusted and confident caregivers in their community. In fact\, 8 in 10 surveyed parents said they would pay more for a trained babysitter who holds Red Cross babysitting certifications. Participants will also get certified in Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED\, and add even more value to their clients. \nThe updated Babysitter’s Training course is a comprehensive\, in-person caregiving program that delivers real-life readiness babysitting skills geared towards those aged 11-16. The engaging\, youth-centered training combines hands-on practice\, engaging videos\, and interactive group activities to ensure participants are well-prepared for emergency situations. \nThe Red Cross babysitting course can help participants provide quality care to children of all ages. Developed by industry experts\, the courses and hands-on activities include topics such as choosing age-appropriate activities\, basic child care\, feeding\, child behavior\, diapering\, safely picking up a child\, and more. \nSuccessful completion of the Babysitter’s Training Course results in a Red Cross certificate valid for 10 years and successful completion of the Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED course results in a a Red Cross certification valid for 2 years. A unique participant email address is required for certification. \nThis course will be led by Jim Rupp\, Lead Instructor/Instructor Trainer for Ridgeline Beats Training Services. A pizza lunch will be provided for participants. \nSpaces are limited and registration is required. If space is available\, the last day to register is Friday\, June 19. This course is open to ages 11-16 and scholarships will be provided to all participants by the Friends of the Transylvania County Library to cover costs. DESCRIPTION:Join us for yoga at the Library!\nClass starts at 9:30 am\, and instructor Clare Desmelik leads the series. Class will take place in the library amphitheater April through November.  We’ll move inside to the Rogow Room during the colder months from December – March. There are no rain dates\, but the porch might be an alternate location for gentle rain.  Yoga is an ancient practice that uses a series of seated and standing body poses held with a focus on the breath and the inner experience.  Yoga is a great mood booster and increases flexibility of mind and body. Everyone is welcome!  This class is free and open to all ages and experiences levels.  Pop in for a single class or attend them all. \nBring a yoga mat or towel and water\, and be sure to dress in layers!\nClare Desmelik has been practicing yoga since the early 2000’s and believes it to be a saving grace. She trusts in the power of taking a deep breath\, as well as taking some ‘time in’ to notice and find awareness in the body.  She feels that anyone’s emotional\, physical\, or mental health will benefit from a gentle yoga practice.  It helps reclaim your sense of calm and quiets the mind; it helps you find freedom and courage in your heart; and it allows you to feel strength and poise in your capable body. She has been enjoying teaching yoga in the Brevard and Asheville area since 2016.  She brings an approachable and revitalizing ‘go with the flow’ vibe to her classes\, which are suitable for any and all!   Clare is also the Spanish and Yoga teacher at Mountain Sun Community School\, a full-time advocate for childhood cancer and pediatric brain tumor awareness\, a grateful mom of two awesome boys\, and is often seen with her golden retrievers. She is authentically convinced that ‘Love Heals’ and yoga is all about love.

SUMMARY:Chautauqua Festival 2026 - Revolutionary Americans - Edgar Allan Poe
DESCRIPTION:Hear his story in his own words. Edgar Poe was scarcely two when his father abandoned the family\, leaving an ailing wife and three children. When he was three\, his mother died and the children were separated to live with others. Edgar became the foster child of Virginia merchant John Allan. He later attended admitted the University of Virginia but was forced to take out loans to pay for it. To pay off the loans he disastrously tried gambling to win the money\, instead falling deeper into debt. After many trials and tribulations\, Poe became the editor of several of the nation’s most successful literary magazines. These often featured his own original short stories\, poems and literary essays. With the writing of “The Raven\,” Poe’s talent became recognized nationwide. He toured the states giving literary reviews\, poetry demonstrations and even scientific lectures. But his great successes were punctuated by bouts of drunkenness and depression\, especially after the early death of his wife at the age of 24 following her extended struggle with tuberculosis. Poe was never an ordinary hail-fellow-well-met. He was dark\, moody\, always looking for love and acceptance and talented beyond his peers. From his childhood to his death\, he created wonderfully crafted poetry and memorable tales and now seems to those who study his life and his works as if he were himself a character from one of his own stories. \nLarry Bounds (Edgar Allen Poe)  \nLarry Bounds has been a Chautauqua performer since 2002\, presenting an assortment of figures including Churchill\, Einstein\, Houdini and Disney for festivals from Florida to Colorado and Nevada. This year he is revisiting one of his favorite authors: Edgar Allan Poe\, a haunted\, literary genius that he taught about in his English classes for decades. In 2019 Larry retired as a nationally certified teacher after 35 years in the classroom. He earned his B.A. in theatre and an M.S. in Education from The University of Tennessee. Larry also still regularly performs as a professional magician as he has since 1973 when he performed for 8 years for Ripley’s Believe It or Not! He lives in Greer\, South Carolina with his wife Carole\, is active in Mensa and serves on\nseveral community boards. \nBased in Greenville\, SC\, Chautauqua History Comes Alive is interactive theater and the performances offer an astonishing journey into the past allowing the audience to hear stories of the characters in their own words. This year’s character performances are Rebecca Motte (Saturday\, June 13); Paul Robeson (Tuesday\, June 16); Mother Jones (Thursday\, June 18); Captain Henry Felder Saturday\, June 20); and Edgar Allan Poe (Tuesday\, June 23). Doors open one hour before show\, seating is first come\, first served. SUMMARY:Chautauqua Festival 2026 - Revolutionary Americans - Captain Henry Felder
DESCRIPTION:Hear his story in his own words. Henry Felder arrived in South Carolina from Zurich\, Switzerland in 1735 at age 10. His parents soon died and as an orphan he had 300 acres to care with the help of a kindly neighbor. By the time the Revolutionary War began\, he had seven sons\, over 3\,000 acres of land\, and was a highly respected leader of his district who recruited and led his own militia. The driving force for Captain Henry Felder’s campaign for political and personal liberty was fueled by his experiences in the South Carolina Royal Court as foreman of the Royal Grand Jury of Orangeburg District. In response to the corruption of the royal judges appointed by King George\, Felder was instrumental in forming a “provincial congress\,” believing it to do a much better job of seeing justice done. Royal judges and governors became frightened at the growing strength of colonists and complained to King George. The King ordered those loyal to him\, “Loyalists\,” to punish the free-thinking communities. So Colonists reached for muskets and created ways to protect themselves. Knowledge of the land and the need for safety for their families and neighbors made local men capable defenders. The rest is history. Felder was willing to lay down his life\, not only for his own welfare but for the welfare and liberty of all. And he did. \nClarence Felder (Captain Henry Felder)  \nClarence Felder is co-founder of Actors’ Theater of South Carolina\, executive producer\, writer\, director\, actor and\nplaywright. His career in film\, TV and stage spans five decades. In Hollywood\, he co-starred for two years with John\nRitter as “Bobo” Pritzger in ABC’s hit cop television series Hooperman\, Danny Devito in Ruthless People and Bruce Willis in The Last Boy Scout. He starred as his ancestor\, Captain Henry Felder\, in the award-winning film All For Liberty\, Daniel Morgan in Echoes of Glory\, Heroes from the American Revolution\, Henry Laurens in John Laurens War and wrote and starred in John at Patmos\, An Allegory. He spent twenty years in New York City co-starring in ten Broadway productions as well as starring in New York’s Shakespeare in the Park and Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival with some of our greatest stars\, writers\nand directors. \nBased in Greenville\, SC\, Chautauqua History Comes Alive is interactive theater and the performances offer an astonishing journey into the past allowing the audience to hear stories of the characters in their own words. DESCRIPTION:Hear her story in her own words. “I belong to a class of people that all down through the ages have been robbed\, murdered\, maligned\, crucified\, deluded and because I belong to that class\, I think it is my duty to stop these crimes.” The fiery words of Mary Harris Jones resonated with workers in the past and still do today. Jones\, who earned the nickname Mother Jones for her maternal devotion to all workers\, was a tireless revolutionary who fought to improve working conditions for workers in the early twentieth century. Mother Jones was indeed a remarkable woman for her time\, or for any time. Her passion and fire to create decent working conditions for all workers still resonates today. She fought for child labor laws and free speech and equality of all people with a fervent determination. Through her fiery rhetoric\, we are able to glimpse a bit of America’s revolutionary past. \nKaren Vuranch (Mother Jones)  \nKaren Vuranch has been researching and performing Mother Jones\, her first Chautauqua character\, for more than 30 years. She began performing Mother Jones for the 1989 UMWA strike against Pittston Coal Company and was the warm-up speaker for Cesar Chavez. Through her company\, WV Enterprises\, Karen travels throughout the nation with her Chautauqua characters\, murder mystery performances and storytelling. She has performed 14 characters\, including Julia Child and Cass Elliot in Greenville. She has also performed throughout the US\, England and Wales with her one-woman play\, Coal Camp Memories\, which she based on oral history she gathered in West Virginia. Additionally\, she has participated in a storytelling exchange in China. In 2022\, Karen retired from teaching theatre at Concord University in West Virginia. \nBased in Greenville\, SC\, Chautauqua History Comes Alive is interactive theater and the performances offer an astonishing journey into the past allowing the audience to hear stories of the characters in their own words. SUMMARY:Chautauqua Festival 2026 - Revolutionary Americans - Paul Robeson
DESCRIPTION:Hear his story in his own words. Born in Princeton\, New Jersey in 1898\, Paul Robeson was the son of a Presbyterian pastor. His mother died in a fire when he was only six years old\, and as a result community members pitched in to help Reverend Robeson raise Paul\, the youngest of five children. In his autobiographical book\, Here I Stand\, Paul wrote: “If I were to try to put down the names of all the folks who helped raise me\, it would read like a roster of Negro Princeton.” Paul was also influenced by the role of music in the Princeton African American community: “Songs of love and longing\, songs of trials and triumphs\, deep-flowing rivers and rollicking brooks\, hymn-song and ragtime ballad\, gospels and blues and the healing comfort to be found in the illimitable sorrow of the spirituals…Yes\, I heard my people singing!” After graduating from Rutgers\, he earned a law degree from Columbia University in 1923 and became part of the intellectual\, cultural and artistic ferment known as the Harlem Renaissance. Like many black artists at the time\, Paul felt his artistry could be a weapon in the fight against racism. Between 1924 and 1925\, Paul’s career\, as both an actor and a singer\, exploded onto the national scene\, but it would be as a singer that Paul would have the artform that best expressed his hopes and beliefs. While living in London from 1927 to 1939\, Paul gained a reputation as “the people’s artist” by dedicating his artistry to the struggle against oppression. In his activism\, Paul was a precursor to the modern day Civil Rights movement. \nMarvin Jefferson (Paul Robeson)  \nMarvin Jefferson has an extensive background as a professional actor/director\, educator and living history scholar. He has devoted many years to studying the lives of Paul Robeson and Martin Luther King\, Jr. Since 1997\, he has engaged audiences across the country with his popular Chautauqua performances of these two important historical figures\, with a particular focus on the Civil Rights issues that were central to the lives of both. His portrayals have also included Louis Armstrong and York\, a member of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Marvin studied acting at the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University.\nBetween 1981 and 1996\, he was the producer/artistic director and co-founder of the Ensemble Theatre Company. From 1995 to 2018\, he taught acting at Bloomfield College\, a private liberal arts college. He began his training as a Chautauquan with the help and guidance of two nationally renowned scholars\, the late Giles R. Wright and Dr. Clement A. Price. \nBased in Greenville\, SC\, Chautauqua History Comes Alive is interactive theater and the performances offer an astonishing journey into the past allowing the audience to hear stories of the characters in their own words. This year’s character performances are Rebecca Motte (Saturday\, June 13); Paul Robeson (Tuesday\, June 16); Mother Jones (Thursday\, June 18); Captain Henry Felder Saturday\, June 20); and Edgar Allen Poe (Tuesday\, June 23). Doors open one hour before show\, seating is first come\, first served. DESCRIPTION:The Noontime Notions series continues. The program will begin at noon in the Rogow Room at the Transylvania County Library. Noontime Notions programs feature authors\, performers\, and presenters providing engaging notions for consideration\, enjoyment\, and discovery. The program is made possible by the Friends of the Library and will last approximately one hour. \nI found an injured or sick animal in the wild! What should I do next? This conversation covers how to safely assess a situation\, recognize signs of distress or injury\, and avoid unintentionally harming an injured wild animal or yourself.   Attendees will learn practical steps to take if they find an injured animal and aim to promote responsible\, humane action that gives wildlife the best chance of recovery and return to its natural habitat.\n\nSarah Clayton teaches Animal Science at Brevard High School and is a local wildlife rehabilitator licensed by NC Wildlife Commission. She has been rehabilitating wildlife for over 10 years in North Carolina.

SUMMARY:Chautauqua Festival 2026 - Revolutionary Americans - Rebecca Motte
DESCRIPTION:Hear her story in her own words. A prominent early Patriot supporter\, Rebecca Motte’s wild adventures during the\nBritish siege of Charleston included her later escape upriver to help destroy the British headquarters in her occupied home! Even though reared in a wealthy family\, she suffered the death of her brother in a shipwreck\, the loss of four of her seven children and\, during the war\, the death of her husband Jacob. After the surrender of Charles Town in 1780\, the British commander chose Rebecca’s home on King Street as his headquarters. She then moved her family to Mt. Joseph\, a newly built country home on a commanding hill overlooking the Congaree River. Ironically\, the British soon after decided to seize that home as well because it was near a key supply road and ferry for both armies. Rebecca\, resigned to her fate\, sadly watched as the British moved in nearly 200 soldiers\, turning her new home into a British garrison with deep trenches and massive fortifications. When General Francis Marion (the “Swamp Fox”) and Colonel Henry Lee and their Continental Army troops attacked Fort Motte\, Rebecca aided them in setting her own home on fire to force the British to surrender! \nChris Weatherhead (Rebecca Motte)  \nChris Weatherhead has been a leading actress in film\, television and stage for fifty years. She trained with Brewster Mason of the Royal Shakespeare company (USC\, Irvine and London). She is a writer\, director and producer of nine award-winning films and co-starred\, wrote\, directed and co-produced All For Liberty\, Echoes of Glory\, Heroes from the American Revolution\, The Final Trials of Anne Hutchinson\, Light for Your Journey and John at Patmos\, An Allegory. She also wrote/directed Frederick Douglass\, No Turning Back and John Laurens’ War. She recently co-starred in the thriller Valley of the Horntak. On prime-time television\, Ms. Weatherhead has had numerous guest starring roles including on Dallas\, Our Family Honor\, Moonlighting\, Night Court\, Sinatra (mini-series) and Equal Justice. \nBased in Greenville\, SC\, Chautauqua History Comes Alive is interactive theater and the performances offer an astonishing journey into the past allowing the audience to hear stories of the characters in their own words.
