DESCRIPTION:Looking Glass Rock Writers’ Conference faculty\, Aimee Nezhukumatahil (neh-ZOO / KOO-mah / tah-TILL)\, will give a public reading at Brevard College’s Porter Center on May 20 at 7:30 pm. \nInformation about Saturday’s reading with Crystal Wilkinson and Alison Hawthorne-Deming. \nAimee Nezhukumatathil (neh-ZOO / KOO-mah / tah-TILL) is the author of the New York Times best-selling illustrated collection of nature essays and Kirkus Prize finalist\, World of Wonders: In Praise of Fireflies\, Whale Sharks\, & Other Astonishments (2020\, Milkweed Editions)\, which was chosen as Barnes and Noble’s Book of the Year. She has four previous poetry collections: Oceanic (Copper Canyon Press\, 2018)\, Lucky Fish (2011)\, At the Drive-In Volcano (2007)\, and Miracle Fruit (2003)\, the last three from Tupelo Press. Her most recent chapbook is Lace & Pyrite\, a collaboration of epistolary garden poems with the poet Ross Gay. Her writing appears twice in the Best American Poetry Series\, The New York Times Magazine\, ESPN\, Ploughshares\, American Poetry Review\, and Tin House. \nHonors include a poetry fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Pushcart Prize\, a Mississippi Arts Council grant\, and being named a Guggenheim Fellow in poetry. In 2021\, she became the first-ever poetry editor for Sierra magazine\, the story-telling arm of The Sierra Club. She is professor of English and Creative Writing in the University of Mississippi’s MFA program. \n\nThe Looking Glass Rock Writers’ Conference (LGRWC) is a unique creative experience for writers which aspires to foster reading\, writing\, creativity\, and a sense of place in Transylvania County.  The Transylvania County Library is a vital\, trusted source for discovery\, inspiration\, and innovation at the heart of a community that celebrates learning\, creativity\, and curiosity.  Brevard College provides an experiential liberal arts education that encourages personal growth and inspires artistic\, intellectual\, and social action. \nAs partners\, Brevard College and the Transylvania County Library Foundation seek to enrich the cultural and educational life of Transylvania County by nurturing and developing the LGRWC. SUMMARY:Author Robin Wall Kimmerer
DESCRIPTION:About the author\nDr. Kimmerer is a mother\, plant ecologist\, writer and SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse\, New York. She serves as the founding Director of the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment whose mission is to create programs which draw on the wisdom of both indigenous and scientific knowledge for our shared goals of sustainability. Her research interests include the role of traditional ecological knowledge in ecological restoration and the ecology of mosses. In collaboration with tribal partners\, she and her students have an active research program in the ecology and restoration of plants of cultural significance to Native people. She is active in efforts to broaden access to environmental science education for Native students\, and to create new models for integration of indigenous philosophy and scientific tools on behalf of land and culture. She is engaged in programs which introduce the benefits of traditional ecological knowledge to the scientific community\, in a way that respects and protects indigenous knowledge. SUMMARY:Paleontologist Jack Horner
DESCRIPTION:“Dinosaurs of the Past\, the Present\, and the Future”\nProfessor John “Jack” Horner will be the Spring 2019 J. R. McDowell Speaker\, sponsored by the Transylvania County Library Foundation in partnership with Brevard College.  His talk\, Dinosaurs of the Past\, the Present\, and the Future\, will be Monday evening\, April 22nd beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Ingram Auditorium at Brevard College.  General admission tickets for the event are $10 and will go on sale April 1\, 2019 at the Transylvania County Library.  (Cash or Check only)\n \nJack Horner is a dyslexic paleontologist!  He is also a Presidential Fellow at Chapman University in Orange\, CA\, and Regent’s Professor of Paleontology at Montana State University in Bozeman\, MT.  He is known for his groundbreaking discoveries of the first dinosaur eggs in the Western Hemisphere\, the first evidence of dinosaur colonial nesting\, the first evidence of parental care among dinosaurs\, and the first dinosaur embryos.  He is widely regarded as one of the world’s foremost paleontologists\, noted for his fieldwork in Montana where he has amassed one of America’s largest dinosaur collections.  Horner is a recipient of the MacArthur Fellowship “genius grant\,” and has been awarded 2 honorary doctorates\, one from the University of Montana\, the school he attended\, and another from Pennsylvania State University.  He has named 10 new dinosaur species and has had 3 dinosaur species named after him.  Horner has published more than 150 professional papers\, eight popular books\, and has been the subject of numerous documentaries. He served as the technical adviser for all of the Jurassic Park (and Jurassic World) movies and is the inspiration for the movies lead character\, Dr. Alan Grant. \nThis annual speaker series\, named for Transylvania County Library Foundation Board member emeritus J. R. McDowell\, is designed to present a wide array of viewpoints on challenging and thought-provoking topics. He lives on a ranch he built himself in Ucross\, Wyoming (population 25\, near Buffalo\, Wyoming). As of fall 2017\, Johnson has written thirteen novels\, two novellas and a collection of short stories featuring Sheriff Walt Longmire of Absaroka County\, Wyoming. The novels were adapted by Warner Horizon for a television series that was the highest-rated debut on that channel. Her novel A Thousand Acres won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award in 1992\, and her novel The All True Travels and Adventures of Lidie Newton won the 1999 Spur Award for Best Novel of the West. She has been a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters since 1987. Her novel Horse Heaven was short-listed for the Orange Prize in 2002\, and her novel\, Private Life\, was chosen as one of the best books of 2010 by The Atlantic\, The New Yorker\, and The Washington Post. \nShe has contributed to a wide range of magazines and newspapers\, including The New Yorker\, Elle\, Outside\, The New York Times\, Harpers\, The American Prospect\, Practical Horseman\, The Guardian\, The Nation\, Real Simple\, and Playboy\, and she regularly blogged for The Huffington Post between 2005 and 2008. \nIn addition to novels for adults\, she has written several works of nonfiction\, including Thirteen Ways of Looking at the Novel\, a history and anatomy of the novel as a form\, and The Man Who Invented the Computer\, an account of the complex and sometimes amazing circumstances that led to one of  the most important inventions of the 20th century. She has also published a five volume horse series for young adults.  Her most recent novels SOME LUCK\, EARLY WARNING and GOLDEN AGE compromise THE LAST HUNDRED YEARS trilogy covering one hundred years in the life of an Iowa family.
