SUMMARY:Great Books
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to read some of the world’s greatest authors of literature\, philosophy\, economics\, political science\, and psychology\, but would like a context for discussing the content? The Great Books Discussion Group at the Transylvania County Library has been meeting for over 30 years and explores a wide variety of selections from works of classic and modern prose\, poetry\, and drama.  The group uses the shared inquiry method of discussion\, focusing exclusively on the assigned reading selection that allows every participant the opportunity to contribute.  The selections are usually short to allow for the twice a month meeting schedule. The group meets from 10:30 am to noon on the first and third Mondays of most months in the Connestee Conference Room on the second floor of the Library (except when the Library is closed). They usually take the summer off\, so do not meet June\, July and August. \nUpcoming reads are listed below from The 7 Deadly Sins Sampler: \nMarch 2: D.H. Lawrence\, The Rocking Horse Winner\, 168-187 (19) \nMarch 16: Elizabeth Bowen\, The Inherited Clock\, 188-213 (25) \nApril 6: No Meeting \nApril 20: Raymond Carver\, Fat\, 216-223 \nMay 4: Xu Xi\, Famine\, 224-241 (17) \nMay 18: Perri Klass\, Not a Good Girl\, 244-253 (9) \nJune 1: Nathan Englander\, For Relief of Unbearable Urges\, 254-269 (15) \nThe group is open to adults and there is no cost to participate other than the cost of the book which contains the themed selections covering many months of discussion. For more information\, contact Hale Durant at the Library at hale.durant@transylvaniacounty.org or call 828-884-3151 x1805.
