SUMMARY:CANCELLED - Yoga
DESCRIPTION:As our beautiful amphitheater is getting its finishing touches\, yoga will be cancelled Friday\, May 1st. We will resume classes May 8th. Thanks for your understanding!\nJoin us for yoga at the Library!\nClass starts at 9:30 am\, and instructor Clare Desmelik leads the series. Class will take place in the library amphitheater April through November.  We’ll move inside to the Rogow Room during the colder months from December – March. There are no rain dates\, but the porch might be an alternate location for gentle rain.  Yoga is an ancient practice that uses a series of seated and standing body poses held with a focus on the breath and the inner experience.  Yoga is a great mood booster and increases flexibility of mind and body. Everyone is welcome!  This class is free and open to all ages and experiences levels.  Pop in for a single class or attend them all. \nBring a yoga mat or towel and water\, and be sure to dress in layers!\nClare Desmelik has been practicing yoga since the early 2000’s and believes it to be a saving grace. She trusts in the power of taking a deep breath\, as well as taking some ‘time in’ to notice and find awareness in the body.  She feels that anyone’s emotional\, physical\, or mental health will benefit from a gentle yoga practice.  It helps reclaim your sense of calm and quiets the mind; it helps you find freedom and courage in your heart; and it allows you to feel strength and poise in your capable body. She has been enjoying teaching yoga in the Brevard and Asheville area since 2016.  She brings an approachable and revitalizing ‘go with the flow’ vibe to her classes\, which are suitable for any and all!   Clare is also the Spanish and Yoga teacher at Mountain Sun Community School\, a full-time advocate for childhood cancer and pediatric brain tumor awareness\, a grateful mom of two awesome boys\, and is often seen with her golden retrievers. She is authentically convinced that ‘Love Heals’ and yoga is all about love.

SUMMARY:Great Books
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to read some of the world’s greatest authors of literature\, philosophy\, economics\, political science\, and psychology\, but would like a context for discussing the content? The Great Books Discussion Group at the Transylvania County Library has been meeting for over 30 years and explores a wide variety of selections from works of classic and modern prose\, poetry\, and drama.  The group uses the shared inquiry method of discussion\, focusing exclusively on the assigned reading selection that allows every participant the opportunity to contribute.  The selections are usually short to allow for the twice a month meeting schedule. The group meets from 10:30 am to noon on the first and third Mondays of most months in the Connestee Conference Room on the second floor of the Library (except when the Library is closed). They usually take the summer off\, so do not meet June\, July and August. \nUpcoming reads are listed below from The 7 Deadly Sins Sampler: \nMarch 2: D.H. Lawrence\, The Rocking Horse Winner\, 168-187 (19) \nMarch 16: Elizabeth Bowen\, The Inherited Clock\, 188-213 (25) \nApril 6: No Meeting \nApril 20: Raymond Carver\, Fat\, 216-223 \nMay 4: Xu Xi\, Famine\, 224-241 (17) \nMay 18: Perri Klass\, Not a Good Girl\, 244-253 (9) \nJune 1: Nathan Englander\, For Relief of Unbearable Urges\, 254-269 (15) \nThe group is open to adults and there is no cost to participate other than the cost of the book which contains the themed selections covering many months of discussion. SUMMARY:Tuesday Storytimes & Weekly Activity
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday Schedule:\n10:00 – 10:30 Babies & Toddlers (birth – 2 years)\n10:30 – 10:50 Activity Time\n11:00 – 11:30 Preschoolers (3 – 5 years) \nJoin us for stories\, songs\, movement\, activities and more as we celebrate and promote early and emergent literacy at the Transylvania County Library! Ages listed are typical ranges for the group storytimes. We realize that there will be some individual variance and we ask that you pay attention to your child’s signals to know what they are ready for\, or ask us if you are not sure. \nActivity Time weekly schedule:\n1st week of the month: Building\n2nd week of the month: Craft\n3rd week of the month: Dance\n4th week of the month: Art\nIf there is a 5th Tuesday in the month\, we will have a surprise activity! \n\nMore About Early and Emergent Literacy \nBabies\, toddlers\, preschoolers\, in all stages of development with their parents and caregivers are welcome to our morning of celebration. Children start to learn language from the day they are born. As they grow and develop\, their speech and language skills become increasingly more complex. During early speech and language development\, children learn skills that are important to the development of literacy (reading and writing). This stage\, known as emergent literacy\, begins at birth and continues through the preschool years. \nFrom birth\, babies listen to language patterns in everyday speech\, as well as in rhyming\, chanting\, and singing – all of these play an important part in literacy development. As they develop\, children see and interact with print in everyday situations. In everything from books and magazines to grocery lists\, whether at home or in preschool\, they are (and should be) encountering language in print well before they start elementary school. \nParents can see their child’s growing appreciation and enjoyment of print as they begin to recognize words that rhyme\, scribble with crayons\, point out street signs and symbols\, and name some letters of the alphabet. Gradually\, children combine what they know about speaking and listening with what they know about print and become ready to learn to read and write. \nThat’s what storytime at the library is all about!

SUMMARY:All Things Appalachia: Carolina Colonies in the Revolutionary Era
DESCRIPTION:“A Gathering Storm: Carolina Colonies in the Revolutionary Era” \nJoin historian and author Bob Plott as he discusses many relatively unknown reasons for unrest in the Carolina colonies that precipitated the Revolutionary War. Some of these issues began as early as 1761\, and involved a host of colorful characters\, including among others\, British Generals\, freed slaves\, American frontiersmen and iconic Cherokee warriors and chiefs. Plott\, using material from some of his six books and multiple other resources\, skillfully weaves this story into an interesting blend of education and entertainment. \nBob Plott presenter bio: \nBob Plott is a North Carolina native who can trace his family roots in the Old North State back to mid-18th century when his ancestors and their dogs arrived here from Germany. When the Plott family settled in Haywood County\, they developed the world-renowned big game hunting dog breed\, the Plott Hound\, which is the official state dog of North Carolina. \nBob Plott continues that family tradition of raising the hounds today. He is also a 2016 winner of the prestigious Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award\, and has written six award winning books—all published by the History Press – celebrating the history of the Plott breed and southern mountain culture\, along with writing scores of magazine articles. \nBob is an avid outdoorsman\, an accomplished woodcarver\, and has conducted programs across the southeast telling the story of the Plott hound. He is included on the traditional artists directory of the Blue Ridge National Heritage Council (BRNHC)\, as well as a featured speaker on the NC Humanities Council’s Roads Scholar program. \nIn September 2023\, Bob received the Mountain Heritage Individual Award\, presented annually by the Western Carolina University Mountain Heritage Center\, Mountain at their annual Mountain Heritage Day Festival.

SUMMARY:Yoga
DESCRIPTION:Join us for yoga at the Library!\nClass starts at 9:30 am\, and instructor Clare Desmelik leads the series.

SUMMARY:Second Saturday Storytime & Craft
DESCRIPTION:11:00 am Family Storytime (birth – 5 years)\n11:30 am Craft Time \nJoin us for stories\, songs\, movement and more as we celebrate and promote early and emergent literacy at the Transylvania County Library! Same theme and craft as Tuesday storytime.
