DESCRIPTION:Tuesday Schedule:\n10:00 – 10:30 Babies & Toddlers (birth – 2 years)\n10:30 – 10:50 Activity Time\n11:00 – 11:30 Preschoolers (3 – 5 years) \nJoin us for stories\, songs\, movement\, activities and more as we celebrate and promote early and emergent literacy at the Transylvania County Library! Ages listed are typical ranges for the group storytimes. We realize that there will be some individual variance and we ask that you pay attention to your child’s signals to know what they are ready for\, or ask us if you are not sure. \nActivity Time weekly schedule:\n1st week of the month: Building\n2nd week of the month: Craft\n3rd week of the month: Dance\n4th week of the month: Art\nIf there is a 5th Tuesday in the month\, we will have a surprise activity! \n\nMore About Early and Emergent Literacy \nBabies\, toddlers\, preschoolers\, in all stages of development with their parents and caregivers are welcome to our morning of celebration. Children start to learn language from the day they are born. As they grow and develop\, their speech and language skills become increasingly more complex. During early speech and language development\, children learn skills that are important to the development of literacy (reading and writing). This stage\, known as emergent literacy\, begins at birth and continues through the preschool years. \nFrom birth\, babies listen to language patterns in everyday speech\, as well as in rhyming\, chanting\, and singing – all of these play an important part in literacy development. As they develop\, children see and interact with print in everyday situations. In everything from books and magazines to grocery lists\, whether at home or in preschool\, they are (and should be) encountering language in print well before they start elementary school. \nParents can see their child’s growing appreciation and enjoyment of print as they begin to recognize words that rhyme\, scribble with crayons\, point out street signs and symbols\, and name some letters of the alphabet. Gradually\, children combine what they know about speaking and listening with what they know about print and become ready to learn to read and write. \nThat’s what storytime at the library is all about!

DESCRIPTION:The Bookmobile will be at this location and available to the public at this time. Stop by and check out your next read!\nBalsam Grove Community Center: 8732 Parkway Rd\, Balsam Grove\, NC 28708\nDriving on highways and back country roads from Penrose to Sapphire\, we strive to serve all corners of Transylvania County. Bookmobile stops are made at child care centers\, senior centers\, outlying community centers and post offices. Home bound patrons are also visited upon request. The bookmobile is a public library branch on wheels containing approximately 3600 frequently changed items for both adults and children. Books checked out on the Bookmobile are free. All you need is a library card! Patrons can register for a free library card on the bookmobile with the proper ID. Books checked out from the bookmobile can be returned to the main library. DESCRIPTION:Take some time out of your week and get crafty with us!  We’ll explore a different craft technique at each of these programs on the 4th Tuesday of the month.  Each session will include light instruction and a bit of guidance as you explore your creative side.  These programs are for adults\, and registration is required. \nMay’s Project: Kinusaiga fabric art\nThis month we are trying our hands at a project inspired by the Japanese art of kinusaiga.
