DESCRIPTION:What / When / Where / Who\nA ukulele open music session is held from 6:00-7:00 pm in the Library Rogow Community Room every 2nd Thursday. Beginner instruction from 5:30 – 6:00 helps the complete novice learn the basics to participate in the following music session. This inter-generational program is open to all ages. The recommended minimum age is 7\, though we require that anyone under the age of 12 be accompanied by an adult. \nDates & Themes \nMonthly themes/songs are chosen by staff with song print-outs available in advance at the Library: \nNovember 14\, 2019: The ’80s\nDecember 12\, 2019: Holiday\nJanuary 9\, 2020: Stage & Screen\nFebruary 13\, 2020: Love Songs\nMarch 12\, 2020: The ’60s\nApril 9\, 2020: Traditional/Folk\nMay 14\, 2020: The ’70s\nJune 11\, 2020: Beach\nJuly 9\, 2020: The ’80s\nAugust 13\, 2020: Country/Americana\nSeptember 10\, 2020: The ’90s & ’00s\nOctober 8\, 2020: Soul/Motown\nNovember 12\, 2020: The Beatles\nDecember 10\, 2020: Holiday \nUkuleles to Borrow \nBring your own\, or borrow one of our ukuleles available for public use in the library during the session only and which can be reserved in advance. Each ukulele has an electronic tuner\, which beginners will be instructed on how to use. Library ukes include soprano\, pineapple\, concert\, and tenor sizes. All ukuleles are in the same standard tuning\, but have different tones based on size. Anyone is welcome to reserve any size\, though those with petite hands may find the soprano and pineapple sizes more comfortable and those with larger hands may find the concert and tenor sizes more comfortable. For ukulele reservations or more details about ukuleles\, such as to see photos or learn about specifications\, stop by the library and ask a staff member. \nBeginner Instruction \nUnlike lessons\, the beginner instruction is NOT cumulative — it is the same content week after week meant to give the complete novice a basic foundational understanding of tuning\, chord fingering\, how to read a chord chart\, strumming\, and rhythm. This will help the inexperienced player to feel more comfortable in the music session to follow. \nMusic Session \nThe hour-long music session is structured according to a theme\, with songs pre-selected by staff members. Songs are selected based on copyright availability\, as well as their popularity and appropriateness for the inter-generational public library setting. Themes and dates are listed above\, and the next month’s song packet will be available at each session. Songs will also be projected on a screen during the session for ease of viewing.
