Genealogy

The Rowell Bosse North Carolina Room has a variety of resources available to aid in your family research.  Our collection of reference book titles including unpublished family histories, county heritage volumes, church histories, census, cemetery, Revolutionary War Pension and NC Civil War Troops records, and high school and college annuals can be searched through the library catalog.  Other resources are explained below.

Local Family Files contain a variety of items, including newspaper clippings, photographs, family histories, documents and genealogies.  The depth of material varies a great deal-some families have a large number of items, while others have only one or two.

MJM Family Files contain family histories, documents and genealogies collected by local historian Mary Jane McCrary while researching her book, Transylvania Beginnings. The depth of material varies a great deal-some families have a large number of items, while others have only one or two.

Ancestry is the world's largest online family history resource with 4+ billion records allowing users to search genealogy and family history records. Ancestry is available on the Library’s computers in the Rowell Bosse North Carolina Room and the Adult Reference area or on laptops through the Library’s wi-fi connection.  Remote access is not available for Ancestry.

African American Heritage provides key genealogical and historical records specific to tracing the lives of African Americans.  It contains information vital to African American genealogical research, including U.S. federal census, freedman and slave records, birth, marriage, and death records, church records, court and legal records, genealogies and family histories.  African American Heritage is available remotely if you have a Transylvania County Library card in good standing.

HeritageQuest is accessible through NC LIVE on the Library’s computers in the Rowell Bosse North Carolina Room, the Adult Reference area, and on laptops through the Library’s wi-fi connection.  HeritageQuest is also available remotely if you have a Transylvania County Library card in good standing.

To access HeritageQuest from outside of the library:
Step 1: Select Transylvania County Library from the drop-down list.
Step 2: Enter the password or your library card number and press submit.

HeritageQuest contains six databases:
Census—complete U.S. Federal Census from 1790-1930.
Books—over 28,000 fully scanned family and local histories indexed by title, individual name, place and keyword.
PERSI—index of more than 2.1 million genealogy and local history articles.
Revolutionary War—selected records from the Revolutionary War Era Pension & Bounty-Land Warrant Application Files.
Freedman’s Bank—search for individuals in the files of Freedman’s Bank (1865-1874), founded to serve African Americans.
U.S. Serial Set—Memorials, Petitions, and Private Relief Actions of the U.S. Congress in LexisNexis ® U.S. Serial Set.
