Brevard College J.A. Jones Library and Transylvania County Library present News Savvy: Analyzing the Fake News Phenomenon

Expert panelists will discuss the rise of fake news, its causes & consequences, and how to discern the credibility of news sources.

All ages welcome. Refreshments provided.

 

Panelists to include:

Dr. Don Diefenbach – Don Diefenbach is professor and chair of Mass Communication at UNC Asheville. He teaches courses in media, ethics, and society; basic video production, and film studies. His research interests include media violence, portrayals of mental health issues in the media, content analysis, and cultivation analysis.

John Lanier – John Lanier is the editor at the Transylvania Times. Lanier graduated with a B.S. from the University of Mississippi and M.A. from Florida State University. He is the recipient of several journalism awards for writing from the North Carolina Press Association and the National Newspaper Association.

Chilly Heinz – Chilly Heinz is an information services librarian at Brevard College’s Jones Library. He handles reference, information literacy instruction, and circulation. On the side, he studies nonviolent communication, reads comic books, and plays music whenever, wherever, and with whomever he can.

Micah Hanks – Micah Hanks is a published writer of many books, including “The Complete Guide to Maverick Podcasting: A Manual for Non-Conformists,” and podcaster for the non-partisan political podcast “Middle Theory”. Hanks will moderate the discussion.
